Australian unemployment will soar to 9.25%, the government forecasts, as the country grapples with the coronavirus crisis

The government will amass more than $184 billion in debt as it tries to combat the economic impacts of the coronavirus crisis. Providing its budget update on Thursday, the Treasury claimed support measures had saved 700,000 jobs but that it had been unable to stop almost 900,000 layoffs.

The federal government has extended the early access to superannuation scheme as part of its budget update. Australians will as a result have until 30 December to withdraw up to $10,000 for the first or second time.
